thrift storesBargain shoppers and needy families have a place to shop for low cost clothing, furniture, and household items—the St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores. There are 17 thrift stores in Central and Northern Arizona, with five located in the Metro-Phoenix area. Volunteers staff the stores, stock the merchandise, and sort through incoming donations of gently used furniture, clothing, and household items. The thrift stores also serve as neighbor distribution centers, providing free items to people in need. Items that are not given to the needy are sold to feed the hungry, help the homeless, and care for the sick.

The Helping the Working Poor program works with families and individual clients. Case managers help plan household budgets, and increase job skills to possibly find better paying employment for participants. The Shifting Gears afterschool program gives low-income youth a place to go and a skill to learn. ministry to the homelessOver 100 homeless people per day come to the St Vincent de Paul main campus in search of a helping hand towards self-sufficiency. Volunteer mentors assess the different needs of each individual. Services and referrals are provided to help the client get off the streets. Follow up assessments and encouragement help with the transition from homelessness, as do special services, such as mental health case management, job training, and substance abuse treatment. |

food reclamationSt. Vincent de Paul receives daily truckloads of food, either donated by grocery stores or collected by community food drives. Volunteers sort the food and hold it to strict quality control standards. It is then sent to the kitchen or sorted into food boxes for hungry families. St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Reclamation Center processes about eight million pounds of food each year. This translates into roughly one million hot meals and 500,000 food boxes for the hungry working poor and homeless in Arizona. |
