programs and servicesSt. Vincent de Paul touches every aspect of the life for those who are struggling. From nourishing the hungry at a dining room, to caring for the sick in a free clinic; from providing shelter from the street at Ozanam Manor, to selling clothing and essentials for living. And at the very heart of these services, lie the conferences; the Vincentians at parishes throughout the Valley spread the mission, and personally visit the poor. . |

svdp historyFrom Paris to the World... The Society of St. Vincent de Paul began in Paris, France, in 1833 when a young law student at the Sorbonne, Frédéric Ozanam, was challenged during a debate to demonstrate what he and his fellow Catholic students were personally doing to help the poor in Paris. Ozanam, then 20, quickly formed an organization known as the "Conference of Chairity." The word spread and within a few years, grew to a group of over 600 Frenchmen, and eventually "leaped the pond" to St. Louis, MO in 1845. 178 years later, the Phoenix Diocesan Council for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has 89 Conferences of Charity, over 2,500 active and associate members (Vincentians), and more than 6,000 volunteers. |
